CBD has become one of the hottest buzzwords in the health and wellness industry.

If you go to your local health store, you’ll find it in various forms on its own or even an additive in other product lines such as skin care, pet products, and food products. But what is CBD? What is all the hype about it, and why can’t people stop talking about it? We’re unpacking the things you need to know about CBD in this blog post.

What is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol. CBD is just one of two components found in the cannabis plant. CBD refers to the non-psychoactive component of cannabis which is known for its calming effects.

What is Cannabis?

Cannabis is a genus of flowering plants, which include three primary species: Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis. Hemp refers to species that contain little to no THC, which stands for tetrahydrocannabinol. THC is the psychoactive component that gets you high. Hemp has been used for centuries because of its strong, versatile fiber. It’s been used in paper, industrial goods, clothing, building materials, and personal hygiene products. Marijuana refers to a species of Cannabis that contains more THC (0.3% or more THC by dry weight), and it can cause euphoric effects on a person’s state of mind.

What’s the difference between hemp and marijuana?

According to an article on Medium, the differences are found in the chemical breakdown of each plant. Hemp and marijuana produce CBD, but the THC is produced at very different levels. Hemp producing little to no THC content, and marijuana producing higher levels of THC. Hemp was legalized with the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018 whereas marijuana is still illegal under the Controlled Substance Act.

Additionally, the two plants have different uses. For marijuana, its THC component produces mind-altering effects with a “high” for consumers. It is used for recreational and therapeutic purposes. Hemp, on the other hand, is used to produce paper, clothing, building materials, plastic, and food products including CBD topicals and CBD-infused tinctures.

What are the benefits of CBD?

Some studies have shown that CBD may support mental clarity, a sense of calm, aid immune function, and benefit heart health.* CBD also contains fatty acids and nutritious vitamins including A, C, and D.

CBD oil may also be beneficial and have a positive impact on overall health and wellness. With its beneficial properties, it may support proper joint function and muscle activity. Some research suggests it may also help provide mental clarity.

Research and studies are still being conducted on CBD and its various products. New findings could suggest further uses and benefits with CBD. Results have suggested that CBD supports a variety of wellness benefits.
