Let’s face it, when it comes to marijuana and hemp, it’s a confusing topic.

Oftentimes, the terms are used interchangeably and within the same context. However, hemp and marijuana have distinct differences that affect your CBD product. It’s essential you know the difference. Let’s take a look and compare and contrast hemp versus marijuana.

Here are the key things to know:

  • Both hemp and marijuana are considered cannabis.
  • Marijuana contains both CBD & THC (the psychoactive part of the plant). While some states have legalized marijuana, it is still considered illegal in many states.
  • Hemp contains multiple cannabinoids with the big player being CBD. However, hemp can contain trace amounts of THC.

Let’s take a look at what makes hemp and marijuana different.

Cannabis is the category that consists of both hemp and marijuana. Cannabis sativa is the scientific term for the cannabis plant (Cannabis being the genus name; sativa being the species name). Specifically, hemp and marijuana are two different categories. Marijuana and hemp are both Cannabis plants, but marijuana wouldn’t be referred to as hemp.

The ultimate divide between hemp and marijuana is that hemp provides practically zero THC. THC is the psychoactive part of the plant that causes the “high” and feelings of euphoria. For a plant to be labeled as hemp, a cannabis plant federally must clock in at less than 0.3% THC. This is crucial to ensure hemp products are accessible to the masses.

The majority of CBD oils and other CBD products come from hemp. If a CBD product or oil is taken from a hemp plant, there is less than 0.3% THC in the product. This means that a consumer wouldn’t get the “high” that comes from THC. However, as a consumer, be considerate of the way CBD is manufactured. Not all CBD is created equal. Make sure that the CBD product and brand carries a COA, or Certificate of Analysis, that asserts the product has been tested and it’s verified to contain the ingredients it claims to have.
